Pet hair making me NUTS!?

I have a 1.5 year old boxer that I love to death, but the HAIR...my god...shes worse then many long haired dogs I've had before. My home has hardwood floors everywhere but my kitchen *go figure* which is carpeted. I have a dirt devil dynamite that was reviewed well for hardwood floors, but the truth is I think I'm just scooting it around...I usually just end up using a good ol' push broom to get it off. Also...my dogs lovely talons are tearing up my lovely floors as well...any suggestions? Vaccuums or otherwise?
